Designer shopping gone mad?

I’m sure we’d all love to have enough money to splurge on luxury items on a regular basis. The perks afforded to the rich and famous are something the average Joe can only dream of. The new Louis Vuitton store in London’s Bond Street is taking things one-step further. The ‘shop’ is laid out as if it was a home, with plush velvet seating and shelves displaying the merchandise. The store that the people at Louis Vuitton insist on called a ‘maison’ has been three years in the making and is hoping to give clients (not shoppers or course) the opportunity to “discover new and exciting experiences”.

An experience it will be, with a revolving ‘bag bar’ showing the latest handbag designs, sculptures by notorious artists and an exhibition in the ‘library’. This really is the place to be seen, if you have the cash that is. Research carried out in Japan showed that consumers are willing to pay fifty times as much for a real Luis Vuitton piece than a fake, despite the quality because it feels ‘”special”. This is in a nation where 60% of households own a genuine LV product.

Architect Peter Marino who is responsible to the ‘creation’ told The Guardian that he is not thrilled with the word luxury, literally “throwing up over the L word right now”. When asked if he liked the store… sorry Maison he said, “The store! Of course. That’s hilarious. The thing is, I just want somewhere I feel good, a nice place to be, somewhere my wife would buy a handbag and then not be dying to get the hell out  straight away. You know what I mean?”

Time for a good ol’ Ruby Murray!

curryBrick Lane in London’s East End has been home to a wide variety of people over the generations. The Ashkenazi Jews followed the Huguenot refugee’s who settled there and now you’ll find the famous street a vibrant hub of the Bangladeshi community in the area. Without doubt the most noticeable change is the move from haberdasheries and humble clothes makers and stalls selling everything from hats and fruit to live birds. Now the top end of Brick Lane is in the majority filled with Indian restaurants and actually has the highest concentration of curry houses in London.

Although not everyone has welcomed the changes, ‘Banglatown’ as it has been nicknamed is here to stay and we may as well enjoy the fact. This weekend sees the beginning of the tenth annual Brick Lane Curry Festival. Take a stroll along the bustling street on Sunday 23rd May and you’ll find it will come alive with music and street performers. There will be stalls selling Bangladeshi cuisine, locals in traditional dress and even snake charmers!

Since the first festival, crowds have flocked to be part of one of the most talked about festivals in London and even Europe. Becoming increasingly popular each year, the festival is a great time to visit the area and take in the site, smalls and most importantly tastes of Brick Lane.

The festival runs for one week from 23rd May.

Oxfam’s Celebrity pop up shop opens for one week only

shopfrontPop up shops, restaurants, art galleries etc have been ‘popping up’ all over London in a bid to lure customers into a unique, quirky and interesting new experience. Not only do they make use of redundant buildings, they can provide serious cash injection for those running the guises, if done correctly. Oxfam is the latest ‘brand’ to jump on the pop up bandwagon, with the opening of the Oxfam Curiosity Shop in London’s famous department store, Selfridges.

Okay, so it’s not your usual Oxfam shop. The staff will be made up of various A–list stars selling high-end and vintage fashion garments donated to the charity by celebrities. This is a one-week only event, starting today, so shoppers will need to get cracking if they want to get their hands on items previously belonging to Alexa Chung, Lady Gaga, Helen Mirren, to name a few.

TV presenter Zoë Ball has raided her wardrobe for the cause. “Just like many women, I have often put off that much needed wardrobe clear out but I was inspired to dig out some of my old favourites for a good cause.”

Singer Annie Lenox, who is amongst the star studded work force said, “Women who are often trying to survive under conditions of chronic poverty motivated me to try to use my talents and resources to contribute to effective change.”

An online auction will be taking place (www.oxfam.org.uk), so people outside of London can also bag a bargain celebrity piece. The money raised will go to women’s projects around the world. Not a bad reason to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. Now where did I put my credit card?

Brits prefer Saturday for supermarket shopping but spend more on Thursday and Friday

shoppingtrolleyHassle-free shopping comes at a price…

The latest nationwide survey, the Online Consumer Index, from iCD Research has found that while 36% of grocery shoppers have no particular day when they do their main supermarket shop, Saturday is the preferred day of the week but not always when they spend the most.

As part of the Online Consumer Index survey, iCD Research interviewed over 9,000 UK main household grocery buyers and questioned them on a range of supermarket and spending behaviours and attitudes. Their findings suggested that whilst people prefer to shop on Saturday, it won’t necessarily be to indulge themselves:

shoppingdays

The study also found that the younger age demographic (18-24) are the most likely to shop spontaneously and on no given day, while those aged 55+ prefer Friday shopping.

Males are more likely to spend more money within an average supermarket shop compared to females (£66.09 c.f. £62.68), while the 45-54 year old demographic have the highest grocery expenditure at £70.41.

ASDA and Tesco dominate when asked about their favourite supermarket experience with ASDA being perceived as offering good value for money, cheaper than other supermarkets and the best range of supermarket own label products.  Tesco wins the supermarket war for always having the products that consumers wanting, customer service, good online delivery and being seen to actively support the community.

Adam Heims, Director of iCD Research, commented ‘while the research we conducted found that grocery shoppers felt that weekend shopping was the busiest and least pleasant, it is evident that time, work and family commitments are all playing a part in driving people to the supermarkets over the weekend period. Given a more pleasant, hassle free shopping environment where they have time to enjoy browsing, people will often spend more’.
