Spring has definitely sprung in Cornwall, with the arrival of the first reindeer born in England in 2,000 years. Experts believe that reindeer have not been indigenous to England for at least 2,000 years, with some saying that it could be more like 10,000.
The new arrival was born on the 1st May and has now been joined by another calf from the same mother.
The reindeer has been named Blue after the bluebells that surround him at his home on the Trevarno estate, near Helston in Cornwall. It makes a change to the predictably named Rudolph and Prancer, the parents of the calf. Staff at the estate are of course delighted with the birth. Ellie Pearce, the estates reindeer expert said, “It was incredibly exciting waiting for the first birth. I arrived in one morning and there he was looking absolutely beautiful. Since then he’s put on a pound a day and he’s become incredibly friendly and inquisitive. He doesn’t tend to stray far from his mother as she is very protective.”
All the reindeer at Trevarno are protected and roam free. They were originally brought over from Scandinavia and are simply thriving in their new environment. The arrival of Blue and his siblings are proof of this. There are said to be two more calves expected later this month.
Trevarno’s general manager, Richard Cox said, “We’re obviously delighted, he really is a gorgeous little fellow and everyone here has fallen in love with him.”
